Phonics – Read, Write, Inc
At Ringway Primary School, we use the Systematic Synthetic Phonics Programme of Read, Write Inc to teach phonics and introduce early reading to pupils. Read,Write Inc phonics teaches children to read accurately and fluently with good comprehension. Teaching staff are passionate and enthusiastic in their delivery of this as they are confident it will allow all pupils to achieve success. They learn to form each letter, spell correctly, and compose their ideas step-by-step. Through this structured programme, children learn the English alphabetic code: first they learn one way to read the 40+ sounds and blend these sounds into words, then learn to read the same sounds with alternative graphemes. They experience success from the very beginning. Lively phonic books are closely matched to their increasing knowledge of phonics and ‘tricky’ words and, as children re-read the stories, their fluency increases. Children connect sounds with mnemonic pictures; words with their meanings and stories with the sounds they know. They connect their own experiences to the stories they read and learn to lift the words off the page.
When pupils start Reception, they will be taught daily phonics sessions using the Read, Write, Inc scheme of work and resource materials. These sessions will be grouped according to ability to ensure children are given the opportunity to make progress whilst being appropriately challenged. These daily sessions will continue into Year 1 where pupils will be exposed to the more complex sounds and delve deeper into the writing and comprehension side to the Read, Write Inc scheme of work.
Year one pupils are required to take the Phonics Screening Check in June which will test their phonic decoding skills. Results of whether your child met the expected standard set out by the DfE will be outlined in their end of year report. For those pupils who did not meet the expected standard for the Year One phonics screening check, they will continue to be given Read, Write Inc phonic sessions as they move into Year 2 with the aim for those pupils to pass the re-check at the end of Year 2. If this is not the case, these pupils will be given phonic and reading support as they move into Key Stage 2.
